Mr. Rubio reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to safeguarding Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid ongoing tensions with Venezuela while highlighting importance of security for stable economic development. To this end, he reiterated that the U.S. would not allow Venezuelan claims to hinder Guyana's path to prosperity.
Regarding recent Venezuelan incursions and claims over the Essequibo region, the Chief US Diplomat underscored the U.S. position in standing alongside Guyana against such aggressive postures and emphasised the need for international adherence to legal norms regarding territorial integrity.
In his words, “It would be a very bad day for Venezuela…if they were to attack Guyana or ExxonMobil. It would be a very bad day, and a very bad week. It would not end well for them.”
In another act of support of Guyana’s territory, the US Navy cruiser US NORMANDY partnered with the Guyana Defence Force to conduct joint exercises in international waters and the Guyana Exclusive Economic Zone.
Secretary of State Rubio also noted the involvement of U.S. companies in key developmental projects, particularly the Gas-to-Energy project, which aims to enhance energy supplies crucial for economic growth. He noted the need for prudent management of resources to maximise their benefits for all citizens.
Mr. Rubio’s visit serves to strengthen bilateral ties between the U.S. and Guyana, focusing on mutual interests in economic development, security, and regional stability. He mentioned that the partnership would encompass collaboration in various sectors, including energy, infrastructure, and defence.
